Our Story

Flying Yoga was just a twinkle in Laura Camp’s mind on a mid-morning, late 2009, when she stumbled upon Todd Spitzer as he served strong brews from an uber-hip coffee cart in front of his slowly emerging Remedy Café. She had been teaching and co-directing at Monkey Yoga Shala since 2001 and was ready for a new challenge. Todd gave Laura a life-changing tip: the identical space next door was newly for lease. Thus, a studio was born.
After a decade of teaching in the East Bay, Laura Camp dreamed of merging the community of playful, athletic, freethinking students her classes had attracted with a fresh, hybrid community — bringing together yogis, dancers, and fitness buffs. Laura was a professional jazz dancer in Texas for 15 years, a personal trainer and fitness competitor in the 90’s, and a 2000′s era circus aerialist. Her experience inspired her to encouage the asana-addicted to roll up their yoga mats on occasion to dance, climb, and fly their way to an enhanced understanding of their bodies.
We fancy ourselves the funky kid on the Temescal block. We work hard, sweat buckets, and laugh till our bellies hurt. We mindfully test the edges of the physical yoga practice, shake our Zumba moneymakers, test our mettle on black and yellow TRX straps, fly on aerial yoga silks, and enjoy a diverse, energetic, and fearless community. We are teachers, doctors, parents, students, community activists, recovering gym rats, recovering rat race runners, and beyond.
Community is built from the energy of many dreamers. The instructors, staff, and students at Flying are passionate, inspired, and dedicated visionaries. We would love to have your voice in the mix.
